says to (What's So Funny 'Bout) : Sitting in the hotel, it wasn't exactly the most adventurous location in town but it was currently the only place she had permission to be. Peregrin wasn't the type to sit around and wait for her twin to tell her when to jump, but for the time being she felt like giving him the benefit of the doubt. After all, Swanley had gotten them this far, right? Last night had been an adjustment...the beds in the hotel just weren't the same. The room was too big even if she tried to think of it as her cozy caravan home. The bath, however, had been exquisite. In fact, the bath was factoring foremost in her mind as she sat at a little table and steeped a pot of tea, fingers playing with the delicate cup in front of her. It was so familiar, a delicate tea cup...in such a strange situation. To see it so far west made Peregrin feel oddly at home. The man who was tending the tables would bring over a sugar and milk and Pregrin would look up but he was already ignoring her. She needed a spoon. With a sigh, she would reach out as he left and then she would give up...not needing to cause a scene. No one knew her and Swanley were gypsies yet...and they had yet to meet the other clan in town! Peregrin wasn't game to mess that up. Instead, she would turn her attention to the small book in front of her...blank pages, except for her sketches. What she was drawing, was nothing special...it looked like a wreath of flowers she was slowly filling in, her eyes, on the waiter. She was waiting for him to pass her by...he had silverware hanging out of the pocket in his tidy little apron. Peri knew for a fact he wouldn't even notice if she palmed one while he passed by. Hand idly moving her pencil along the rough paper...as the man came near, his hands full with a meal for another patron, Peregrin would stretch...and reach...and the touch of metal was soon to follow, a smirk the first bit of personality coming to her angular face.

says to Burn Candles For MePereg: The hotel wasn't that bad. He was here on official business. Well, sort of. There had been a bit of a skirmish not that long ago and a man had been stabbed. They had done their best to control the bleeding but unfortunately a major artery had been nicked and the man had died. The hotel manager had offered Nate a change of clothes because his others had so much blood on them that he had ended up throwing them out. But it wasn't the first pair of clothes that he had thrown out so for him it really wasn't that big of a deal. He had washed up his face and hands, there had literally been blood everywhere. And then the body had been taken out of the hotel. Things like this happened on a daily basis so it wasn't uncommon for people to be nonchalant about it.
He had just finished changing and was starving so he came down to the dining area and noticed the woman, who was Peregrin, sitting by herself and trying it appeared to get the attention of the old man waiting the tables who didn't seem to be paying attention to anyone. A grin was on his face as he noticed her palm the silverware as he passed and Nate sat down in front of her and folded his arms on the table with a knowing smile. "I would have stolen it from him too, he's kind of an ass. Doesn't listen very much. Are you new in town? I've never seen you before. My name's Nate." He held out his hand for her to shake for a guy he had pretty good manners and he didn't really mind that she had stolen something, it wasn't really any of his business, but he found it amusing at best. If someone wasn't paying attention to him he would probably resort to those means also. But as a doctor he tried to remain respectable, didn't often work though.

says to (What's So Funny 'Bout) : Peregrin had noticed the body leaving down the stairs...it seemed like they took it out the back door at least. It wasn't the first one she had seen in her time but it did bring back unpleasent memories. After all, bodies were the reason her and Swanley were in Frisco in the first place. Blood Feuds were common among families and sometimes they lasted generations. Lucky for the Pikes there was enough bloodshed to avoid future family lines. It was a morbid thought, but an honest one...she had been glad to see the body go out the back. Peregrin didn't need to think of the stiff every time she used the front door if she had to be trapped in the hotel. Hand full of silverware, she was about to go back to her sketching when someone joined her at the table. The smirk on her face would vanish and Peregrin's visage was a mask. Nothing but polite innocence...you would even have to wonder if she spoke the language, the way she was looking at Nate. Fortunately for them both, he was pretty amiable about the whole thing and Peri had missed socializing enough to relax.
"You shouldn't use that type of language in front of a lady...let alone a stranger. Came in last afternoon...seeing if Frisco's a fit."...after all, wasn't that the story of most in the west these days? Peregrin didn't look like a miner or a farmer, she didn't even look like a settler. She didn't look like money, either. Her clothing was finer, but it wasn't anything new...it looked like the fabric had been turned out from another dress and the shawl she had tied around her shoulders was older. Held shut by a pin that screamed European, her red hair was a riot of copper around her shoulders, soft and clean. Clean. Whoever she was, it was obvious she had enough money for a bath recently. Her teeth were good, her eyes were clear...and the hand she shook his with was oddly calloused. Horses whips and gun play did that to a hand after all. "Nice to meet you Nate. You can call me Ms. Pike."...Peregrin had been married, but with the death of her husband she took back her family name. The look on his face was open...amused...and Peregrin would take a moment to motion to his seat. "So if you're not law, to what do I owe the pleasure? If you want to see how I did it, it'll cost you..."...she would tease, but it wasn't far from the truth. Peregrin didn't mind teaching skills for a buck, especially because she was bored.

says to Burn Candles For MePereg: It was pretty sad when things like this happened. People got into petty squabbles that ended in bloodshed. There was no reason for the senseless violence and yet he saw it happen every day. It was becoming more and more common and the death toll in Frisco was rising over stupid things that you shouldn't be stabbing or shooting someone over. But that was just the temperament these days. In his opinion people were pretty nuts. Nate had been the one to actually request that the body go out the back. He didn't want to alarm anyone any more than they needed to be alarmed. And well he didn't like scaring people either. The guy that had been killed didn't really have a family, he was a travelling ranger that was at the wrong place at the wrong time and got outnumbered. He noticed when he sat down her smirk vanished and her face became a bit of a mask but it was polite enough. He almost wondered if she was from out of town, he had spoken to a gypsy the other day so he wouldn't be surprised if more people were here from Romania that he didn't know about.
She seemed to visibly relax as she told him he shouldn't use that language in front of a lady and it was his turn to smirk. "Sorry. Old habits die hard."But the man really was an ass, he actually knew him quite well and the guy was old and crotchety as they come and didn't really give a good goddamn about anyone. He also looked like he came from money, he was in respectable clothes that were silk and fit nicely, not poor material in the very least. It wasn't like she would just know that they came from the hotel but he actually did have a house and was pretty well off because Paul paid him well. He liked her red hair though, there weren't too many redheads around here and he liked a good redhead woman with strong, beautiful features like hers. He shook her hand with a smile and gave a nod. "The pleasure is all mine, Ms. pike." Hmm kind of formal. He knew if she was a Ms. that she wasn't married. He laughed as she teased him and he leaned back in his seat. "I'm not the law, no, I am a doctor. I took care of the man you may have seen being carted out the back door. It was too bad, an artery was hit and by the time we arrived he had lost too much blood. I just wanted to introduce myself, since I am one of the doctor's in town, I like to be friendly even with the people who are just passing through, in case you need something from myself or Paul." Who had already high tailed it out the door of course. He was an older guy in his 40's that knew a hell of a lot about medicine and Nate felt lucky to be studying under him. "How long do you think that you will be in town, Ms. Pike?" He was only asking because he was curious, he wasn't trying to be rude or anything but mostly just trying to start conversation. He was a friendly guy, though probably swearing wasn't the best first impression to make.

says to (What's So Funny 'Bout) : Romania...no. There were many types of Gypsies out there and the Roma were just one sect. Unfortunately for the Pikes...they didn't know that the other clan in town were Romany gypsies. The Pikes, were Travelers...typically Irish, English, or Scottish. The Pike family had been brought over as indentured servants...pretty much slaves...and their style of Gypsy was looked down upon by the Romany variety. It would be interesting to see what was going to happen...but for now, it wasn't a Romanian accent that lightly graced Peregrin's words. No, she sounded lilting and Irish...it went well with the hair...and the bit of formal attitude that came with it! After all, who was Nate to be talking to Peregrin? In her culture not only was he an outsider, but he was a man who wasn't family. He was a threat...and if Peri wanted to keep her reputation as a clean gypsy woman, she wasn't going to get too close! Even if he was well dressed. Looking over the silks, Nate would explain himself and Peregrin would give a little nod, reaching for her teapot.
"Oh a doctor, you say! I'm not sure how comforted I am if you just let your patients die."...of course, it was a joke. He explained about the artery and Peregrin would give Nate a soft smile, understanding. There wasn't a person in this town, she would figure, who hadn't seen loss but the look in Peregrin's eyes stated that she knew how hard it was on those left behind. Those who had tried. "God sees your good work and I'm sure rejoices in your dedication. I don't think he feels the same about muskers..."...or the police. A little joke for her gypsy heart, she didn't mean to make it to an outsider but she didn't have any other way of speaking! Reaching for her pot of tea, she would pour a cup and nod her head towards him..."Would you like? You certainly could stand some refreshment I'm sure. Consider it a thank you from my family to your profession."...after all, it was thanks to doctors Peregrin still had at least two siblings to call family. Pushing the teacup across the table to him and motioning to the sugar and milk, she would pick up a cube in the spoon she had stolen. "One lump or two?"...she had yet to answer how long she intend on being in town and her words were spiritual, if anything. She didn't know how much she believed in God...but she certainly believed in the Devil. The man was interesting..confident, but she assumed it came with the territory. Peregrin for her part, enjoyed the fact that if Swanley ended up in a fight...now she knew who to find to fix him!

says to Burn Candles For MePereg: He often wondered just how many types of Gypsies there really were. They had been seeing more and more of them in Frisco but they certainly knew how to conduct their business so it really wasn't a bad thing at all. Of course he would have no way of knowing that their type of gypsy was looked down by the Roma. He didn't know a whole lot about gypsies as a general rule, having met so few of them. But Violca certainly seemed pretty interesting to say the least. The gypsy seemed to have their own personal touch to things. He did gather her to be Irish because of her accent and her hair. He could see how her culture would see him as an outsider. Anyone that came into town was kind of seen that way here. You were a local or you were an outsider. But they got so used to them that outsides were definitely common place now-a-days so he paid no heed to hierarchy. But a threat? Well, now, he wasn't really a threat at all. He had never really hurt a fly. But it was more of he was an outsider to her because of her beliefs and such and he would totally understand if she ever brought it up in conversation.
He gave a nod. "Yes." Then he laughed at her joke and he actually kind of liked her sense of humor. It was pretty funny and kind of a change of pace around here. But then her face softened when he spoke of how the poor guy had died. "Thank you." Nate didn't often say it but he wasn't very religious at all and he wasn't sure how he felt about God, really. God let a lot of shitty things happen to good people so he was more or less leaning toward they were created by some kind of higher power but fuck if he knew what it was. Good thing he didn't speak like that aloud though, in his head he had a potty mouth on him but he knew not to say those types of things out loud unless they were in less moral of company. Her little joke had him grinning. "I'd say not." And as she offered him tea he gave a nod. "Yes, please. Thank you, that's very sweet of you." He let her pour the tea and he had a terrible sweet tooth so... "Two, please." Yeah. Well thankfully he didn't have rotten teeth yet. He took as good of care of his teeth as he could. Though he may be missing a couple of them in the back already, give or take. He would be glad to know that she at least found him interesting. He liked to be entertaining, especially to a beautiful lady like her. He didn't mind that she didn't seem to want to talk about her business or how long she was staying, he was intelligent enough to just drop asking her. "So what do you think of Frisco? I have lived here for a long time now and find it to be exciting and well... interesting to say the least." He was curious as to what she thought of this fair land from an outsider's point of view. He liked to think that he was at least good at making conversation. And he would be sipping his tea and she could tell that he really enjoyed it. "That is pretty good tea." He chuckled and took another sip.

says to (What's So Funny 'Bout) : Religous or not, Peregrin was the type to spread her thanks when someone was deserving and she saw Nate and his professon was worthy. The praise was heartfelt and when the man thanked her Peregrin would smile a bit, her air of formality starting to melt, after all...laughter made everything better and his had a cheerful ring to it. He would ask for two and she would drop them carefully into his cup before passing it over, a little scowl as the waiter eyed their table and finally started to approach. "Oh good. You see now that I have such illustrious company you'll great me as a customer, yes?"...and not a whore...but Peregrin wasn't about to say that. Instead, she would wave the spoon at the man before tapping it on the table, an eyebrow as red as her hair raising. "I would like another cup, please, and something to feed my hard working companion."...she would dismiss the man with a wave of her hand and if he didn't leave and stayed to speak to Nate, she would shoot the waiter a look that would wither. That is, if he cared...which Peri was sure that he didn't. Finally alone at the table, Peregrin would pop a sugar cube past her pert lips, a little sigh of happiness as the sugar started to spread its sweetness...
"I'm traveling with my brother and in lieu of a husband or father, he has forbidden me from leaving the hotel. So far, I comply...but I'm itching to go to a store! It's been so long since I've been inside a town...I'm sure Frisco has it's charm but it makes my skin crawl."...it had nearly driven her to rabbit like nervousness the first night! Taking in a deep, resigned breath, Peregrin would lean back in her seat and idly, her hand would play with her pencil as she looked Nate over, considering how he spoke about Frisco itself. "We had heard tell there was...family...in town. I've yet to meet them...my twin is out doing that. I have seen my room...this lobby...the porch...and my favorite, so far...the bathtub!'...as much as she sulked recounting the lack of sights she had so far seen, there was nothing but joy at the mention of the last! Pencil tapping on her paper, she would reach for a sugar cube with the other, echoing Nate's sweet tooth so it would seem. "The bath was delightful. I had almost forgotten I had red hair. I'm glad you enjoy the tea...my mother taught me the recipe..."..it was an old family drink, not that there was much family to drink it these days! To share it would bring a look of sweet sadness to her face and Peri would eye the teapot for a moment, not sure she was ready to share her feelings with a stranger.

says to Burn Candles For MePereg: It was nice that she was spreading the thanks. It wasn't often that really happened lately, though of course there were still others that thanked him around town when he did things and thanks went a long way. That air of formality seemed to be winding down, though he might think it strange if she were to open up to him right away, though most people actually did because he just had that kind of contagious personality. He tended to either bring out the best or the worst in people. Hopefully the best but it didn't always fall that way unfortunately. He would agree though that laughter was the best medicine. She was scowling at the waiter and he really didn't blame her, seems as soon as Nate showed up, he wandered over to serve them. If she had said that whore thing out loud he probably would have laughed really loud and admired her spunk. He would definitely not defend the guy though, he had been here before and seen him ignore women. Not sure what his beef was with them but yeah. She was an outsider and some people took less to them. "Oh, thank you." She was being very generous and he liked that. It wasn't often that people treated him to things. Well, other people anyways. He ordered the special for a meal knowing it was probably meat and potatoes but meat and potatoes were pretty damned good here. And it was filling.
Hearing she was traveling with her brother in lieu of a husband or father, he gave a nod of understanding. "And why can't you leave the hotel?" He was curious about that. "Well there are many good stores in Frisco." He had to chuckle as she said that Frisco made her skin crawl. "Well that's understandable, considering where you are cooped up." It wasn't like the hotel had a bad reputation or anything but Frisco was much more exciting outside of the walls of a hotel. He was sipping more of his tea as she looked him over, he wasn't clean shaven so he had a fair bit of stubble on him, not quite a full beard which indicated he still was young and had some aging to go, but he was getting there, slowly but surely. His hair was neat and styled, short and spiky just the way he liked it. "Really? I haven't heard the last name Pike..." Or maybe he had and just forgot or didn't know them. The town was huge so there were still people that he didn't know floating around. "The bathtub sounds wonderful." He himself loved a good bath at the end of the day. "It's a great recipe. Whereabouts did you come from?" He was curious to get to know her better on a general basis, he wasn't going to pry too far into her personal life, she would reveal what she wanted to him and if she wanted to get more personal he wouldn't be opposed because he liked to listen to people and their problems and offer solutions, he was just that type of person, friendly and helpful and full of good advice. One might even say empathetic.

says to (What's So Funny 'Bout) : "My pleasure. I believe in being generous when I can be..."...besides, she was just superstitious enough to believe that her health was wound up in her luck and her karma. What better luck than to show a doctor her thanks! He would order the special and Peri would join him in it, a mention of..."Put it on our tab."..as the man left. After all, if things didn't turn out in Frisco, she wasn't going to let swanley pay the bill. Call it thanks for their rude waitstaff! Way to stick it to the man.
Nate asked Peregrin why she was bound to the hotel and the woman would pull a face that was akin to a childs, but could you really blame her? Sighing heavily, she would shut her sketchbook with a little fit of temper and slump in her seat. Scowling across the table, not that it was Nate's fault, it seemed like the woman was restless and in need of a smile! Why else was she pouting and sucking on sugar cubes like it was the only fun she'd have all day! "Cousins, distant cousins. I doubt they know we even exist but in this world...better family, than outsiders."...or Gorgers...but she wasn't ready to give herself away yet! Not to king Gorger himself. Not only was he a finely dressed doctor, but he was a kind man, and one who seemed perfectly comfortable in himself. His face was a bit rugged with the stubble, and his hair seemed particular. It wasn't a gypsy man at all and Peri wasn't willing to see just how deep Nate's smile went. "The bath was heaven on earth...I felt like a bag of tea myself!...and we hail from...everywhere. We're travelers..."...the closest she got to saying Gypsy. The waiter would come to the table and for a second, Peri would choke on her own tongue, her face going red as she waved a hand in the air, trying to speak, but the waiter was taking his damn time! "That is, travelers in a circus. Or we were. So we're from everywhere and no where. Never spent time in no town before..."...the more she got flustered, the more she spoke of her past life, the stronger the accent got...the formality completely gone to accent and bad use of the English language. Tossing her hair over her shoulder, she would add milk to her own, newly delivered teacup, and pour herself some of her ma's favorite, thinking it over. What it meant to be in a city....missing home. The roads. Her caravan and the circus tents. "We had quite the act...woulda been perfect here...You'd have had patients coming in from too much excitement."...she would tease, giving the man a wink as she watched him across the table, eyeing him up as a perspective audience this time!

says to Burn Candles For MePereg: He smiled. "Then we share pretty similar beliefs." At least in that regard. He liked to save people for a living so he supposed that was pretty generous. But he did believe in luck and karma and fate. All of those superstitious things. He watched the rude waiter guy leave and turned his attention back to Peregrin with a smile. He liked the idea of sticking it to the man when man is being an ass.
He saw her pulling that face, it was rather cute actually. But no he couldn't blame her. It sucked being stuck in one place, it was enough to drive someone insane if they had to be stuck long enough. No it wasn't his fault but as she slumped in her seat he thought maybe he was in for quite the story. The sugar cubes were really good and he was tempted to down a couple but he didn't really want to lose another tooth it was a rather painful thing to get it pulled out with pliers. "Oh I see." He had a lot of cousins too. His family was not from around Frisco they were out in the Northeast area so pretty far away. No he was not a gypsy man and he sadly would never be, he did like the culture though and found it to be very interesting. He had heard the phrase travelers before and he was starting to wonder if he was talking to another gypsy! Not that it was a bad thing at all he rather liked their company. They were certainly very interesting people and she proved that by telling him that she had been in a circus. "Oh really? That's great! I love the circus." There had been quite a few acts that came and went throughout the town and he always loved watching the circus and going to it. He noticed her accent was getting more prominent when she seemed to be getting frazzled. "Oh I bet! Frisco has seen a circus or two but not for a long time. They would eat it right up!" Her wink was charming and he returned it with a grin. He noticed Paul waving at him to come follow him and he frowned with a sigh. "Well unfortunately dinner will have to wait. It looks like Paul needs my help and he pays the bills. It was nice meeting you, Ms. Pike, and I hope to see you again. Thanks so much for the tea and sorry that I didn't get to stay for dinner." He was sure that someone would come along for the free meal! He just hoped she wouldn't find him rude for ducking out on her. It is only cause the typist has to work tomorrow and has to go to bed. "Until we meet again." And then he was leaving the hotel with Paul to get into god knows what was going on now. (thanks for playing sorry I had to cut it short!)
